Relief goes back to Tyler’s big choruses from his first EP whilst introducing his new experiments with atmosphere and building tension. Punchy, upbeat, and impossible not to tap your foot to, Relief combines the best of Tyler’s hook writing abilities with brighter melodies and retro synth sounds and riffs giving this track a sound somewhere between ‘80s electropop, classic rock, and stadium pop. It’s a winning combination and the track is packed full of hooks, both subtly, in the background, and in the chorus. You can tell Tyler is having fun running with the ideas here, and it pays off. Relief is a big, single-worthy track, fast paced, tense, and yet providing a great selection of hooks and memorable lines to offset the darkness in some of the other parts of the EP. With curling, groove filled riffs which remind of Edwyn Collins’ Girl Like You in places to subtle, twinkling sounds in the background in the style of Owl City, Relief offers plenty to get stuck in your head. With a lyrical contrast to some of the other tracks as well, Relief celebrates seizing the moment when a relationship is going well. The title is two fold, the track does indeed provide a relief and release from some of the darkness of other tracks, as well as summing up the solace and freedom which can be found in giving yourself to another person. And with it’s driving bassline and riffs which mirror it, both the track and the relationship move along like clockwork. Driven by the hi-hat and bass, Relief shows off Garrett’s impressive higher register adds balance with his rasp in other parts of the EP. The lightest, most pop oriented track on the EP, Relief shows the other side of Garett’s artistry with a big chorus which is impossible to ignore.
